Do come to our October First Friday Writers’ Corner:

Date: Friday, 3 October 2008

Time: 6:00 for 7:30 (see below)

Location: YMCA Lounge (4th floor, Orchard Road YMCA)

Topic: Creative Journal Writing III

Keeping a journal is a good way to document your writing journey. It has both literary and therapeutic benefits, as we can increase our ability to describe, to record where we are at the moment, and to recognize our own blind spots.

This session will be taught by Maurice Neo, Society of Singapore Writers President. Don’t worry if you missed the earlier sessions — you can still attend!

The formal programme starts at 7:30. The time between 6:00 and 7:30 is for you: if you have written anything you would like to have reviewed, come by early. We’ll be glad to provide a sounding board. All genres welcome.

The YMCA Lounge is located on the fourth floor of the YMCA building, 1 Orchard Road. We may be inside the Y Cafe (turn left after exiting the elevator) or outside on the patio (go straight after exiting the elevator). We meet informally, so you can give us a ring if you don’t see us:

Thomas: 9720 3353

Singapore International Story Telling Festival

SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL STORY TELLING FESTIVAL

25 Aug – 9 Sept 2008 @ the Arts House

securedownload.gif

This year, we are proud to have invited Nury Vittachi; well known Hong Kong based author and journalist. Nury is one of the few authors in Hong Kong to be internationally published in multiple languages. There are more than 90,000 of his books in print, ranging from non-fiction to novels.

SEMINARS

How to Write and Sell a Novel

3 Sept 08, 9.30am to 5.00pm, S$270* (*early bird registration by 31 Jul 08)

Virtually all the popular bestselling authors in the world come from a handful of countries in the West. Writers in the West are always complaining about what a crowded marketplace they are in, but in other places, there’s hardly any competition. It’s time to fix that anomaly. You CAN write a novel in East Asia and have it launched worldwide by major publishers.

Developing Stories and Characters for Novels, Movies and Game

4 Sept 08, 9.30am to 5.00pm, S$270* (*early bird registration by 31 Jul 08)

Learn the secrets of the perfect story - creating believable characters, generating believable dialogue, building tension into your story. Whether you seek to write for novels, movies or games, traditional or experimental, comic or tragic, equip yourself with the skills to be a future writer. Be ready for new forms of fiction.

PUBLIC TALK

How Asia will become the World’s Hotspot for Cultural Creativity

5 Sept 08, 7.00pm to 8.00pm, Free Admission

The west’s stranglehold on fiction-based entertainment is loosening and a generation of creative Asians is waiting in the wings. “Most eastern countries are no longer colonies of western countries,” Nury told a reporter in 2005. “But the west still has a stranglehold on the entertainment industry — the biggest books, films and music groups. It’s time we fought for independence.”
