“Celebration! I have become a full fledged member of the Society of Singapore Writers (SSW). What tip the point for me was my attendance at the June First Friday Writers Corner (FFWC) gathering. It was an eye opener. I had no hesitation that SSW was for me long term.

I urge all aspiring writers to be associated with SSW as it has great empathy for the would-be writer. In fact non-writers will also benefit from it, I think.

Thank you Maurice and Irwan for the fruitful meeting. I am honor to have spend a wonderful evening with inspired people and an experienced writer like Ismail Kassim. It gave me deep insights into the writing process..

Cheers to all members and friends of SSW!”

Here are my thoughts to share about last night’s FFWC:

1. Maurice, your face can launch a thousand ships …!

2. Maurice – your speech is captivating & your voice powerful: I love that. with a bit of polish it is near perfect! Cheers,

3. The sharing from the group interesting though the intermittent disturbances from the back (people coming into the room & chairs shuffling in) can be minimised. But on the whole, you are very motivating and keep up the great work!

I look fwd to attend your next session when time permits.

Wishing you all greater success in building a bigger community of writers who believe in themselves & that creativity & success do come hand in hand plus all this beautiful emotional support from you guys!

Cheers,

Is it true that many creative people have never been recognized? Is it accidental or inevitable for a creative person to be successful, or is success more certain for an uncreative, destructive person?

SSW President Maurice Neo will lead the discussion on these issues, in order to come to a deeper understanding of ‘Creativity’, a word that, in the opinion of SSW veteran Poh Choo, “has become a cliche – being often misunderstood, misused, misinterpreted and misrepresented”.

Do come to our March First Friday Writers’ Corner (FFWC):

Date: Friday, 2 Mar 2012

Time: 6pm (for 7pm see below)

Location: Epigrams Book (1008 Toa Payoh North #03-08, Singapore, Singapore 318996)

Topic: Creativity and Success

You are welcome to join us for our regular First Friday Writers’ Corner, where writers gather to discuss the art of writing. This month we will be examining the relationship between Creativity and Success.

Maurice has taught Creativity at the SMU with SSW Prof Kirpal Singh.

Come clear up your misconceptions and let free your creative juices. Do come to the 2 March First Friday Writers’ Corner (FFWC)
at 1008 Toa Payoh North #03-08, Singapore, Singapore 318996
(Tel: 6292 4456, http://www.epigrambooks.sg/). 5 minutes to Braddell MRT. Buses 93, 157, 163.

We will be there from 6 pm till 10.30 pm. The formal programme starts at 7.30 pm. The time between 6 pm and 7.30 pm is for you: if you have written anything you would like to have reviewed, come by early. We’ll be glad to provide a sounding board. All genres welcome.

Light refreshments will be served.

Nov 2011 FFWC

Do come to our Nov First Friday Writers’ Corner:

Date: Friday, 4 Nov 2011
Time: 6:00 for 7:00 (see below)
Location: YMCA Lounge (4th floor, Orchard Road YMCA)
Topic: Whither the Mainstream Media? by Elgin Toh

The formal programme starts at 7:00. The time between 6:00 and 7:00 is for you: if you have written anything you would like to have reviewed, come by early. We’ll be glad to provide a sounding board. All genres welcome.

From 7.00 onwards FFWC will unveil for the first time in a no-holds-barred public dialogue one of the new breed of mainstream media (MSM) rookie reporters, Elgin.

It has been said, across the length and breath of Singapore – that the younger generation, not beholden to the bag and baggage of the past, are not as reticent and are more willing to act on their convictions as to what is better for post nation-building in the island state.

It is a phenomenon that will have none more poignant implications than in the way the MSM is run.

Will the old scares of the dangers of aping the West appear again to resist inexorable change?

Can the likes of Elgin and his ilk provide both the elusive innovative media strategies and the necessary will to respond to exponential social change that begs for real sustainable solutions?

Elgin is at the political desk of The Straits Times. He spends most of his time covering partisan politics and major policy issues of the day, but occasionally diverts some attention to stories on unions and the Chinese community.

He was an SPH Overseas Scholar. In 2008, he graduated summa cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis, majoring in Political Science and Economics. His honors thesis was on strategic voting in single-member plurality district. In 2010, he completed a Masters degree in Chinese Politics from Peking University. His thesis was on mass protests in contemporary China.
The YMCA Cafe/Terrace is located on the fourth floor of the YMCA Orchard, 1 Orchard Road. We may be inside the Y Cafe (turn left after exiting the elevator) or outside on the Terrace (go straight after exiting the elevator). We meet informally, so you can give us a ring if you don’t see us:
